Get the Chashme Baddoor style!

The remake of the 1981 cult film Chashme Buddoor starring Farooq Shaiq, Rakesh Bedi Deepti Naval and Ravi Baswani hits screens today. Directed by David Dhawan, the costumes of Chashme Baddoor have been done by the talented Niharika Khan. Personally, I’m not a fan of remakes because they invariably end up being a dismal take on the original. But I like the way the characters have been styled in this one, giving the film a look and feel that’s vastly different from the original, just as it should be. Niharika spoke to me in detail on the look of each character. And below is an attempt to deconstruct each of their look. Which one’s your favourite? Trendy Thursdays – Smoking slippers

In the Victorian era, men used to wear them in the smoking room and that’s how they earned the moniker. Well, thank God we are not in the Victorian era, for these smokin’ hot slippers can now kiss the feet of women too. Fashion plates Rihanna, Jessica Alba and Miranda Kerr clearly can’t have enough of them.

So what really are smoking slippers? Simply put, they are a variation of the ballet flats (women) and loafers and Venetian slippers (men) and certainly a lot more edgier than them.  Also, they since they cover a lot of your feet, they are positively anti-tan and hence great for the summers.

The shoes, also called Opera shoes, were first seen in the 1800s and have made an impressive come back this season with every major fashion house including Prada, Manolo Blahnik, Valentino, Cole Haan, Vince Camuto, YSL and Christian Louboutin focusing on it.

But the most iconic ambassador of these slippers has and always will be the oldest casanova in the world, Hugh Hefner (yeah, yeah, the ‘Playboy’ guy!!). Most recently, it was spotted on Siddharth Mallya and the Big B himself who wore it with his white churidar kurta to the premiere of English Vinglish.

Smoking slippers, especially for men, are typically in velvet with either a statement monogram or a tassel.  As for women, they could be in any form: from animal printed ones to striped and metal studded, options are plenty.

How to wear it:

We love Mr. Bachchan, but sadly he’s got it wrong this time. Smoking slippers need a bit of pampering. So they need to be paired with cropped bottoms or peg legged trousers for maximum impact. Owing to their regal look and feel, they go wonderfully well with ethnic attires. So think achkans, churidar kurtas and even bandhgalas with trousers. Ladies, wear them with your short skirts, trousers, ankle length leggings, dresses or anything else you fancy, but make sure the socks are out of the picture. Please.

These beauties can work from day to evening and at formal and casual occasions. So, they are totally worth acquiring, given that they are flats and hence good for your sole (pun intended!).

Expert speak: Shoe designer Nayantara Sood says, “They are becoming popular is because women are wearing a lot more flats these days and they want more varieties. They lend the androgynous look which is trending right now. It’s especially big during the summer because it’s  all about short skirts, wide legged linen pants and dresses. Men have been wearing it for a while and it stands for dandy fashion. It’s started as a winter trend, but now it’s seasonless.”

Tweed today!

Folks, it’s World Tweed Day! And since Style Mynt celebrates all days dedicated to fashion (read our post on White Shirt Day?), we thought of dedicating this post to the stylish Scottish fabric that found fans in super sleuths Sherlock Holmes and James Bond, no less!

The most fascinating thing about tweed as a fabric is that it never goes out of style. It’s one of those investment pieces and something that keeps the grammar of your wardrobe sound. And if you want to include it in your summer wardrobe, do what Louis Vuitton did (they did a pair of knee length boots with tweed patches on them), and include tweed in small patches.

One can’t not talk about tweed and legendary French designer Coco Chanel’s tweed jackets, which, arguably is one of the most iconic inventions in the fashion history, and compelled Chanel head, Karl Lagerfeld, to bring out a book on it called The Little Black Jacket.

The unfinished woollen fabric used to make jackets, coats and trousers, native to Scotland, lends itself beautifully to two major patterns: the herringbone and houndstooth.

Every major design house including Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry Prorsum, Gucci, Karl Lagerfeld and DKNY have worked over time to bring the fabric back in fashion and right now it’s going through a revival of sorts with fashionistas wearing it with gusto. The fashion forward Sarah Jessica Parker was seen in an Oscar De La Renta tweed jacket while both Zoe Saldana and Halle Berry picked Isabel Marant tweeds. Kate Middleton (in a Kate Nessie white tweed jacket), her fashionable sister Pippa Middleton, Penelope Cruise, Kylie Minogue and closer home Imran Khan, Lara Dutta and Shah Rukh Khan (spotted in a green tweed jacket at the Marrakesh Film Festival) wore the tweed with elan.

Expert speak: Noted designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed says, “Since bespoke is coming back, which tweed is associated with, we are seeing a revival of it. Tweed was one of the first fabrics that was invented in the colder climates. Therefore, it’s important to rejuvenate it from time to time. If you want to incorporate it in your summer wardrobe, you can use it as a patch on your garment.”

Behold! The glorious bottoms!

Yet another blast from the past, coloured bottoms have gained immense popularity this season. No longer Howard’s (Big Bang Theory) trademark style statement, it isn’t surprising if you find yourself flaunting a pair rather soon.  But wait! It is not just the skinny denims that demand the love this season. With jeggings, harem pants, coloured denims, palazzos and jodhpuris to choose from, the women are spoilt for choice. As for the men, they are not shying away from coloured bottoms either.

The trend emerged as a strong one last year, and gained momentum to become something of a wardrobe staple by summer this year. The favoured colours are yellow, indigo and cobalt blue, orange, emerald and parrot green, red, oxblood and purple. The glitterati has been charmed by it, if the images above are anything to go by. Everyone in Bollywood from Freida Pinto (green twill pants) to Sahana Goswami (turquoise palazzo), Sonam Kapoor (in cobalt blue cropped trousers), Sridevi (seen wearing them on several occasions),  Kiran Rao and Priyanka Chopra (who made the white tee – coloured bottoms trend super hot) have surrendered to the trend. In the West, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz and Kim Kardashian have spent top dollars on coloured skinny jeans.
The men have taken to this trend equally enthusiastically. In Bollywood, Aamir Khan made heads turn in his green trousers paired with a crisp white shirt, and Ayushmann Khurrana followed suit by wearing a green pair too. John Abraham went for an oxblood pair, Imran for a soft red one and the dashing Ranvir Singh demonstrated a bold fashion act by wearing a fiery orange one for the shoot of a magazine cover. Then of course, there were style mavens Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Russell Brand who elevated the trend to another level.

 How to wear it:

The easiest way to wear it would be to team it with a white or a black shirt or singlet (for women). Since the bottom already is colour heavy, it’s better to keep the top simple. The other thing to do is to wear it with a floral printed top. If you have picked coloured leggings, match it with a printed kurta. But that wouldn’t work if you have picked a colour as bright as tangerine or sunflower yellow. Pair them with flats, casual shoes, boat shoes (men) or even peep toes when you’re in a mood to dress it up. But even in its dressiest avtar, coloured bottoms are great for a day look.

 Why we love this trend:

 It’s unisex, unlike most trends.

It’s a fun way of prepping up your day look.

It’s youthful and enchanting.

It’s a great way to stand out in the crowd and make a statement.
