Gangsta styles!

Another gangsta movie hits the marquee today, and this time it’s based on S Hussain Zaidi’s best selling novel Dongri to Dubai. The John Abraham-Anil Kapoor-Kangna Ranaut starrer Shootout at Wadala seems promising, especially with the true to life period costumes (the film is set the in the late 70s, early 80s) the characters are wearing. The talented Kunal Rawal has put together the wardrobes of John and Anil after consulting with Zaidi himself, while designer Rajat Tangri has worked on Kangna’s costumes.

Trendy Thursdays – Ankle strap shoes

As the summer peaks, it is time to pull out those strappy sandals to go with sundresses and brightly coloured nails. And the timing couldn’t be more perfect for the biggest trend in shoes right now – the ankle strap.

So many styles!

They can give you a very feminine look, with thin strapped kitten heels or an edgy update on the classic black sandal, with thick bondage-esque bands. Flat leather strappy sandals are timeless, but this time, wear them in two-tones or contrast colours.

Rounded closed toe sandals with ankle straps look super girly and the ones with pointed toes are ultra-ladylike, so take your pick. Wear thin strap sandals with cropped skinny pants and broad strap ones with hot shorts to keep the focus on the legs.

And you know what? They are every girl’s must have since they keep your feet properly secured even in those sky high heels, so you can party all night long!

Strapping Stars

Both international stars and Bollywood ladies seem to be in love with this trend. Freida Pinto and Jessica Beil make a bold statement with thick straps while Sushmita Sen, Shraddha Kapoor and Evelyn Sharma wear the daintier thin strap sandals. Jessica Alba does the city chic look in a black pant suit paired with those elegant closed toes. Gwynyth Paltrow, Poorna Jagannathan and Anushka Manchanda totally rock theirs in neon orange accents and Zoe Saldana wears hers with a thigh high slit gown, the perfect way to show off her legs!

Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Nicole Kidman and Kalki Koechlin, have all included ankle straps in their summer style.  You can also wear flat ankle straps, like Anushka Sharma.

The only thing to pay heed to is that ankle strapped shoes cut inches off your frame. So if you are vertically challenged, be sure to stick to ankle strapped heels with thin straps. Those blessed with endless legs can of course indulge in cutesy ankle strapped flats.

Full length trousers, sarees and floor kissing skirts or maxi dresses are the enemies of the ankle strap style, for they don’t show the ankle at all. It’s like getting a gorgeous pedi and wearing boots! Remember that.

The fast talking feisty star turns 25 today. Happy birthday Anushka Sharma! In a short span of five years, she’s played everything from a demure Punjabi bride-turned-dancer to a confident con woman and a tough wedding planner. With that infectious smile and those endless legs, she can carry of just about anything. Here’s our favourite Anushka looks.

The changing room

before-afterWe end the month of April with another succesful makeover. I love makeovers because of the possibilities they present to me. This time, we picked Samyak Jain, a corporate honcho in his late 30s who’d had enough of his stripes and checks and wanted something radically different and Rekha Singh, a young IT professional who was craving for a more ‘élegant, sorted’ look. Our task at hand was to deliver what they had asked for. And deliver, we did!

What made it easy for us was their openness to change. They didn’t resist anything and went with whatever was suggested to them. It took just a few hours and some vibrant, colourful separates (Einstein printed T shirt, sea green bottoms, a leather bracelet and boat shoes) to take a good 10 years off Samyak’s face. As for Rekha, she looked radiant and feminine in her high low hemline dress, a bold cuff, nude heels with a golden clutch completing her look, all carefully picked and very much on-trend. The make up was kept minimal, yet very evening.

I execute these makeovers for a very selfish reason. I like to believe that they will earn me great karma (fingers crossed!). The beaming faces of Samyak and Rekha, made all the effort more than worth it. But don’t go by our words. Watch the video to get a feel of what the makeover meant to the two.
