To mom, with love

It’s Mothers’ Day tomorrow and you know what that means – time to pamper your mom with a nice lunch, a movie and some lovey gifts. After all, she deserves at least a day of heavy duty pampering for everything she does for you including putting up with your tantrums! Although moms are all the same (they love us unconditionally and worry too much for us!), they have different personalities. Here’s a little help from us for  picking the right gift for yours!

The Homemaker Mom

As much as she loves to cook yummy meals for the family, she frets over keeping the house clean and more often than not, you are at the receiving end of her vexation. But home wouldn’t be half as comforting without her, right?

Gift her comfy Kaftan tops and relaxed trousers, or smart separates like a kurta with leggings for an effortless style to take her from home chores to shopping without any fuss. A large tote bag and flat sandals would be useful too, for quick trips to the mall or the local vegetable guy.  And don’t forget sunscreen and cool sunglasses to keep her comfortable while going out.

The Party Hearty  Mom

Her social calendar is packed with kitty parties and get-togethers. She knows neighbourhood gossip before the neighbours themselves and her friends always come to her for party planning. She loves to host brunches and dinner parties as much as she loves dressing up for them. She always looks her best and never seems tired!

Gift her brunch-perfect dresses or cocktail party sarees, along with stylish accessories like clutches. You can never go wrong with a classic maxi dress. And when in doubt, there is always that perfect perfume to make her light up with joy!

The Boardroom Mom

Her phone never stops ringing and you wonder how she manages a million things at once. Always on the go, she is obsessed with punctuality and don’t you dare be lazy when she’s around. She knows that she is the boss at home too!

A smart white shirt, a scarf and well tailored formal trousers are perfect gifts for her. If she works in an office that has a strict ethnic dress code, a crisp cotton saree works well as a gift. Gift her a smart laptop bag and a nice watch, along with a set of minimalistic earrings that will accentuate her classy corporate style.

Fashion from the zombie land

So the  country’s first zombie film, Go Goa Gone releases today! And it has the utterly yummy Saif Ali Khan in what’s easily the most intriguing look of his career. Blonde hair, leather jacket, a sexy stubble et al. While we are fence sitting on whether we actually like Saif’s wannabe Russian mafia look or not, the rest of the characters played by Vir Das, Kunal Khemu and Pooja Gupta, sport great casual chic styles that you can take a cue from, especially because almost everything you see on them has been sourced. A quick chat with the film’s stylist Nital Ganatra revealed what each character’s look in the film is all about.

Trendy Thursdays – Watercolour prints

When it comes to prints for summer, there is nothing more refreshing than watercolours. With their unique abstract forms and colourful fluidity, they have generated a great deal of interest among celebs this season.

Watercolour prints have a whimsical, artistic quality to them, with their soft edges and colours flowing into each other. Wear them in pastels on ethereal chiffons and the effect is oh-so-romantic and feminine! Watercolour prints are not necessarily florals, although painterly florals are definitely big this season. In fact, the more abstract and bleeding the print seems is, the better.

Water colour prints in muted shades like sky blue, baby pink and mint green make a great day look and deep jewel tones can be worn for evenings out. Keep the accessories simple, like a pair of nude pumps or metallic statement earrings.

Who is wearing watercolour prints:

Rachel McAdams, Carrie Underwood and Maggie Gyllenhaal took the trend to the red carpet in floor length gowns, while Emma Watson and Julia Roberts wore shorter dresses in silk. Anushka Sharma and Amrita Puri chose straight dresses to show off the print, and Dia Mirza and Suzanne Roshan wore feminine, flowy dresses. Deepika Padukone wore a breezy maxi dress while Iliena D’Cruz gave another dimension to the print in her tulle overlay gown.

Not convinced yet? Even US First Lady Michelle Obama (her sartorial sense has been praised by the most severe fashion critics) wore a bright hued watercolour dress at a Cinco de Mayo celebration in the White House.

How to identify watercolour prints

Watercolour prints have a smudgy effect, as if the colours have just spread across the fabric. Look for brushstrokes, uneven edges and abstract impressions.

Expert Speak: Bangalore based designer Namrata G says, “Water colours are huge this summer and should be worn in a manner that defines the look. The fabrics should be cottons and chiffons as they can carry the prints the best. Garments like kaftan, tunics, and tops look nice in water colour prints and can be teamed with palazzos or ankle length pants. Long flowing dresses also look beautiful in water colours.”

Neha’s fashion file

neha-dhupia-2

Neha Dhupia’s undoubtedly one of the most impeccably styled actresses we have today. She pushes fashion boundaries, takes chances and is always the one to watch out for at public appearances and red carpet events because of her sartorial choices. In an exclusive interview with Style Mynt, she tells us all about her fashion fetish. And her advice to fans is: Just be yourself. Everything said in a fashion magazine is not necessarily true. If you feel you’re looking good, just go out there and let your hair down.

Now’s the time for neon!

Neons have been around for a while now, but we can’t get enough of this trend. The neon wave has surpassed runways and red carpets, and is now so big that you cannot ignore it. After all, neon screams for attention and that’s what you’ll get when you wear it! It’s fearless, young, fun and very very summer. So, we love it!

Celebrities have endorsed neons in different ways. While Huma Qureshi, Avantika Malik, Natasha Poonawala and Dipannita Sharma wore neon accents in their outfits, Genelia D’Souza, Anushka Manchanda and Nicole Scherzinger wore neon coloured footwear. Sarah Jessica Parker, Heidi Klum, Nicole Richie and Sona Mohapatra accessorized with bright neon bags. Jennifer Lopez did the yummy neon yellow and pink combo, and Katy Perry chose a saturated neon green look.

Neons were the biggest thing in the 80’s and 90’s and now that fashion from those decades is back, neons are back too. But we tell you how to wear them without looking like a blast from the past.

Neon nail paint is a fun way to experiment with this colour. For just a hint of neon, try wearing a neon watch or belt. Carry a neon clutch or wallet, and you will never be bored with your look, no matter what you wear. Neon shoes go great with neutrals; try them with a pair of jeans and a white tee, or a floral printed dress. While you can pair neons with white, black and beige, you must try grey, as it gives neons a base like no other colour. The idea is to include neon in small doses if you’re too apprehensive of wearing a neon ensemble.

We suggest not doing a total head-to-toe neon multicolour look, unless you are going out to a rave party or an 80’s themed bash. If you are not sure how neon would look on your skin tone, don’t wear it next to your face. Always keep the look clean, with not too much embellishment, since it is about the colour, not the texture.

Boys, don’t be shy about sporting the neon trend. While international rappers and pop stars love their fluorescent hues, you can try them too. With everyone from cricketers to umpires wearing neon shoes at IPL, we think it is time to embrace this trend, guys!
