Fashion from the zombie land

So the  country’s first zombie film, Go Goa Gone releases today! And it has the utterly yummy Saif Ali Khan in what’s easily the most intriguing look of his career. Blonde hair, leather jacket, a sexy stubble et al. While we are fence sitting on whether we actually like Saif’s wannabe Russian mafia look or not, the rest of the characters played by Vir Das, Kunal Khemu and Pooja Gupta, sport great casual chic styles that you can take a cue from, especially because almost everything you see on them has been sourced. A quick chat with the film’s stylist Nital Ganatra revealed what each character’s look in the film is all about.

Now’s the time for neon!

Neons have been around for a while now, but we can’t get enough of this trend. The neon wave has surpassed runways and red carpets, and is now so big that you cannot ignore it. After all, neon screams for attention and that’s what you’ll get when you wear it! It’s fearless, young, fun and very very summer. So, we love it!

Celebrities have endorsed neons in different ways. While Huma Qureshi, Avantika Malik, Natasha Poonawala and Dipannita Sharma wore neon accents in their outfits, Genelia D’Souza, Anushka Manchanda and Nicole Scherzinger wore neon coloured footwear. Sarah Jessica Parker, Heidi Klum, Nicole Richie and Sona Mohapatra accessorized with bright neon bags. Jennifer Lopez did the yummy neon yellow and pink combo, and Katy Perry chose a saturated neon green look.

Neons were the biggest thing in the 80’s and 90’s and now that fashion from those decades is back, neons are back too. But we tell you how to wear them without looking like a blast from the past.

Neon nail paint is a fun way to experiment with this colour. For just a hint of neon, try wearing a neon watch or belt. Carry a neon clutch or wallet, and you will never be bored with your look, no matter what you wear. Neon shoes go great with neutrals; try them with a pair of jeans and a white tee, or a floral printed dress. While you can pair neons with white, black and beige, you must try grey, as it gives neons a base like no other colour. The idea is to include neon in small doses if you’re too apprehensive of wearing a neon ensemble.

We suggest not doing a total head-to-toe neon multicolour look, unless you are going out to a rave party or an 80’s themed bash. If you are not sure how neon would look on your skin tone, don’t wear it next to your face. Always keep the look clean, with not too much embellishment, since it is about the colour, not the texture.

Boys, don’t be shy about sporting the neon trend. While international rappers and pop stars love their fluorescent hues, you can try them too. With everyone from cricketers to umpires wearing neon shoes at IPL, we think it is time to embrace this trend, guys!

Gangsta styles!

Another gangsta movie hits the marquee today, and this time it’s based on S Hussain Zaidi’s best selling novel Dongri to Dubai. The John Abraham-Anil Kapoor-Kangna Ranaut starrer Shootout at Wadala seems promising, especially with the true to life period costumes (the film is set the in the late 70s, early 80s) the characters are wearing. The talented Kunal Rawal has put together the wardrobes of John and Anil after consulting with Zaidi himself, while designer Rajat Tangri has worked on Kangna’s costumes.

The changing room

before-afterWe end the month of April with another succesful makeover. I love makeovers because of the possibilities they present to me. This time, we picked Samyak Jain, a corporate honcho in his late 30s who’d had enough of his stripes and checks and wanted something radically different and Rekha Singh, a young IT professional who was craving for a more ‘élegant, sorted’ look. Our task at hand was to deliver what they had asked for. And deliver, we did!

What made it easy for us was their openness to change. They didn’t resist anything and went with whatever was suggested to them. It took just a few hours and some vibrant, colourful separates (Einstein printed T shirt, sea green bottoms, a leather bracelet and boat shoes) to take a good 10 years off Samyak’s face. As for Rekha, she looked radiant and feminine in her high low hemline dress, a bold cuff, nude heels with a golden clutch completing her look, all carefully picked and very much on-trend. The make up was kept minimal, yet very evening.

I execute these makeovers for a very selfish reason. I like to believe that they will earn me great karma (fingers crossed!). The beaming faces of Samyak and Rekha, made all the effort more than worth it. But don’t go by our words. Watch the video to get a feel of what the makeover meant to the two.
