Summer is all about dressing down, but sometimes we need an extra layer when the movie hall gets chilly or the office air conditioner is a bit too cold for comfort. That’s where summer jackets come in.
Why celebs love jackets:
The right jacket can give a strong definition to an outfit. Imran Khan and Avantika wore lightweight jackets to dress up their casual outfits, while Huma Qureshi and Kiran Rao wore theirs to give structure to maxi dresses. While Deepika Padukone and Jessica Alba wore printed jackets over white tanks, Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr rocked a denim jacket over a maxi dress. Evelyn Sharma, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Beyonce and Emma Stone were also seen wearing lightweight jackets.
Arjun Kapoor brings out his rugged look with the cool white tee – denim – jacket combination. Shahid Kapoor and Akshay Kumar wore lightweight jackets while travelling and Daniel Craig and Leonardo DiCaprio wore denim and chambray jackets for summer.
How to wear them:
Structured summer jackets in linens and chambrays are best for work and travel, as they are sleek and sophisticated, while denim jackets are great for your days off.
Pair a flowy sundress or maxi with a fitted denim jacket for windy evenings, and give structure to a jumpsuit with a light blazer. If you are wearing clashing prints or bright colours, a plain jacket can bind them together. Alternately, a bright cropped jacket can add a pop of colour to a monochromatic outfit. Wear a floral or abstract printed jacket in pastel colours over a plain tank and skinny jeans for a casual chic style. That way, the jacket would be the winning piece.
Men can dress up a basic jeans and tee look with just the addition of a linen jacket. Waistcoats are also good options for layering, for a cool and comfortable look. Whether it is a casual jacket or formal, roll up the sleeves for that easy-breezy vibe. Just make sure that the jackets are in light, comfortable fabrics that breathe so that it does not get too hot in there!
Expert Speak: Bangalore based designer Ritu Pande says, “Summer jackets have been around internationally, but they are a fairly new trend in India. The reason is that now air-conditioning is everywhere, whether you are working or going to a mall or the theatre. In India, the materials that work best are linens and voiles, since you can’t wear heavy fabrics in summer. Wear jackets in crinkled cotton, lace and crochets for a vintage, boho chic look which is in right now. Either choose soft colours like ivory, off white and pastels or go to the other end of the spectrum with neons like lime, yellow and corals.”
